AMAA AWARDS 2012- FULL NOMINEES LIST/CATEGORIES OF NOMINATIONS



The main prelude to the awards proper held recently and was tagged the AMAA Nominees Night 2012. The spectacular venue was Kamaira Beach Hotel, Banjul, Gambia. Reason(s) for the choice of Gambia has already been announced, for an award that is the most authentic in Africa there was the need for it and for all to explore the best parts of other parts of the motherland. Many would not forget in a hurry, the beauty, the splendor and the warmth of Banjul and her people; as the country and her people welcomed all the guests with open hands.

A Nigerian film-ADESUWA produced by the award winning producer extra-ordinaire Lancelot Imasuen and confidently racked in 10 nominations, which is the highest by any country. While Nigeria got a total of 52 nominations, the nearest country to her, in terms of nomination was South Africa, which had a total of 45 nominations 2 of the countries films Otello Burning & How to Steal 2Million got 13 and 11 nominations respectively. Ghana got 17 nominations, followed by Kenya 14, Uganda had 5 & Tanzania got 3. There were other nominations from the Diaspora as African film makers in the US, UK, Canada, France, Germany, Guadalupe, Italy and Jamaica sent in their productions.

In all, there were a total of 328 entries from across the continent, 108 more entries than that of the previous year-2011. There were 43 entries from Africans in the Diaspora and all the other entries shared between 23 countries from across Africa. The entries include 134 feature films, 88 short films, 57 documentaries and 6 animations.

The honorable clan of jury for this year's award was lead by Dr. Asantewa Olatunji-Director of programming, Pan African Film Festival, other members are Dr. Hyginus Ekwuazi, Film Scholar, Steve Ayorinde, Managing Director/Editor-in-Chief, National Mirror; Dorithee Wenner, a Curator at the Berlin Film Festival; June Giavanni, Programmer for Planet Africa at The Toronto International Film Festival; Shuiabu Husseini, actor, dancer and the Guardian's arts Journalist; Keith Shiri, Founder & Film curator at the London festival; Ayoko Babu, Executive Director of the Pan African Film Festival and others.

The main event is set for April 22, 2012, and it would be at the Eko Hotel and Suites spectacular hall, and the day's host would be Hollywood actor- Jimmy Jean Louis- he is the former model turned actor from Haiti, many would remember him as Dr. Tunde Jonathan, in Phat Girlz.
