ARISE ORGANISERS & MODELS NON-PAYMENT. WHAT'S GOING ON?

PRINCE NDUKA OBAIGBENA

HELEN JENNINGS
We have been inundated by calls and sent anonymous comments bordering on the fact that a year after many so called home based(local) models did the last Arise Fashion Week 2012, they are yet to receive the payment for their jobs.  The models are especially angry that the annual show might not be happening in Nigeria this year, so they might not have the opportunity to make their grievances known. Also they are saying is it possible for the shows organisers to owe models abroad?

It got a bit bothersome, when those calling or sending comments began to think we were in league with the organisers to hide the fact that they have not being paid. The fact that we didn't or haven't talked about it, is because we never knew about it or could not have imagined that the organisers would have refused to pay the models(male & female) for jobs they had contracted them to do. Now from the little snippets we have gotten, the models seem to be ready for a showdown anytime soon. Many of the models have made up their minds that unless they are paid from henceforth, they wouldn't do any subsequent shows ever again. They are now saying that if they had known it would turn out like this, they would have walked away like some of their colleagues did last year just before the show began.

So over to you organisers, what seems to have affected the delay in payment to these models for a whole year? And if someone was mandated to do the payment, what has happened to the money and even the person? Is it in your plans/budget to ever pay these models?

These questions need urgent responses and we are waiting to hear from you. Also can the models come out openly to make their demands?

  6. Do not blame the agencies. If you know him you would know that he does not like to pay.

This man is owing every body plus the international production company he employed.

You all need to stop working for him.

    Good luck!

  11. Like seriously guys. In any international fashion event there is always a lead model that gets paid more.

ARISEs event had over 70 shows so of course some models would be paid more.

What every one fails to recognise is each and every model at that show received a massive amount of publicity and I am sure that some of them even got more work off the back of this event - That is a first for Africa!

I do not agree with non payment of debts but surely it is the responsibility of the model agent to chase revenues owed for their models, like Lola @ Beth Models said. I'm a Nigerian male model and I work in London, I know how this works. I have walked in countless shows FOR FREE just to make a name for myself. After a year of doing it for free I am now getting paid! This is just how the industry works!

Prince Obaigbena is doing a lot for the country and I would go so far as to say he is doing a lot for the continent!

He has brought so many Nigian designers and models to New York, London and many other places.

Look at these designers now - Lanre Da Silva is working with D&G - Jewell by Lisa is working with L'Oreal. It is Prince Obaigbena that has paved the way for this to happen. You forget he has been doing this for Nigeria since 2006.

Who else can say they are doing anything to bring the countries talent to the attention of the world?

  16. These comments are so stupid!! People really need to get FACTS before they start name calling, some of you should be ashamed of yourself, calling ppl names and defending a case you don't know the in and out of. Please check the Beth Model facebook page and you will clearly see the Names of models that have been paid! Beth has been fighting for these girls and even fought for several of Isis models to get paid, (they shouldn't lie and testify to this) Joan hasn't done half of what Beth has done and as a Isis model I can tell you this! People should cut Beth some slack, she has been trying to get hold of the organisers of Arise for over a year to get the remaining funds and is still awaiting news....no need to curse her child, that has nothing to do with this issues. GROW up people and don't be so quick to judge and curse......Learn the truth before you open and talk SHIT.

  17. Yes Beth and the others would be responsible for the models, is this the first time they are dealing with Arise? No, why didn't they demand payment upfront, or better look for models who wanted to do it free or all together just dont do it.....you know they dont pay ontime so why complain...rubbish all these wannabes
