So yesterday, Thursday, December 20, 2017 was the D-day and the convergence point was the expansive hall of the Eko Hotel and suites, Ademola Adetokunbo Street, Victoria Island Lagos. The event was the 60th anniversary edition of the longest running beauty pageant in Nigeria, known to the world as Miss Nigeria.

This was the 2017 edition, organised as expected by Daily Times Newspapers owned by Fidelis Anosike's Folio Communications. The historic event was sponsored by the likes of GAC Motors, Wazobia FM who aired the proceedings live, Heritage Bank who were prominently involved, Lasena Waters, Yudala, NAPTIP, Cinitron, Studio 24, FIRS & others.

The red carpet was billed to have started at 5pm and the show itself at 8pm. As expected the timing was totally off, as none gave those times any importance whatsoever. Just imagine that as at 9:30pm many were just still trickling in, Fidelis Anosike chairman of Folio Communications was so incensed by this, that he openly spoke about it later when he had the opportunity.

The judges to pick the new queen were many, it had the likes of Chioma Ude, Ex-queens Helen Prest-Ajayi 1979, Binta Sukai 1990,  delectable Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde, architect extraordinaire Jumoke Adenowo, designer of note Odion Oseni, DG of NAPTIP-Julie Okah-Donli, Future Awards & Red Media's own Debola Williams, Noble Igwe of Style Vitae & 360 Nobs, The Wedding Party 2's Enyinna Nwigwe and a few others on the seats to do the job.

Guests were aplenty, Heritage Bank one of the major sponsors was very well represented by many of their directors likes of Jude Monye, the acting MD, Adaeze Udensi an ED & even their Chairman.

Former Governors Aremo Olusegun Osoba of Ogun State and James Onanefe Ibori of Delta State attended, devoid of every paraphernalia of office that they used to enjoy. James Onanefe Ibori attended with his gorgeous wife and they both actually came on time at 8pm, they actually came from Orji Uzor Kali's Daughter's white wedding. So accessible was Ibori, that we actually walked up to him and shook his hands when he was going out to bring a guest in all alone. Others that we saw were the likes of NFF Chairman Amaju Pinnick, billionaire businessman Musa Danjuma, Erelu Kuti, Erelu Abiola Dosunmu who was also a judge

Also seen were the likes of Terry Wayas, Linda Ikeji, Freda Francis, a very pregnant and sumptuously shaped Akunna Nwala of Kuku's hair, former MD of the now defunct Bond Bank, John Darlington, the in your face Hilda Dokubo who was in all black and showed off her assets with aplomb, Prisca Ndu, Destiny Amaka who has lost a massive amount of weight one is first shocked on seeing her, Chike Chikeluba, Linus Idahosa, former best model of the world, Bunmi Ademokoya, Joan Okorodudu and many others.

The entertainment was provided by Mayorkun who performed admirably well, performing 3 of his hits to the delight of all.  Nigeria's king of pop 2baba totally raised the roof with his performance, dude really knows how to get to the people/crowd/fans. The crown prince, of off the cuff mad hilarious jokes Bovi was in his element (as he effortlessly cracked people's bones that they laughed and laughed), he also was one of the days hosts too, the other being the handsome Ebuka Obi Uchendu who was partnered again with Lala Akindoju! This pair are really in demand this season and must be raking in loads of dough for it. Bovi was mostly partnered with Olive, who changed a couple of times during the course of the event, into some beautifully sexy outfits that must have gotten some eyes popping!

ELOHOR AISIEN DUMPS MISS NIGERIA PAGEANT

 First it was the former beauty queen now Chief, Ms. Nike Osinowo-Soleye that first dumped the organizers of the Miss Nigeria Pageant, Folio Communications owned by Fidelis Anosike. Now after just one edition of what we thought was the now revitalized beauty pageant, the person we thought was the new savior of the franchise in the person of Beth Model Agency boss, who also now owns a 1st class event's company, in the person of Elohor Aisien has now severed relationship with the same organization. 

The last edition of the beleaguered beauty contest that had been in coma for several years (a queen reigned for 6 years at one point) before it was resuscitated by Chief Nike Osinowo-Soleye, in our estimate was one of the best organized in a long while, so we had expected a long and very fruitful relationship between their new creative director in the person of Elohor Aisien and Folio Communications, but alas after just one edition of the event, the center could not hold together amicably again. 

According to our findings, the reason for Elohor's action might have been because of the shoddy treatment she got at the last edition after the sweat and blood she had put into organizing a first class event. Just imagine getting the then new hotel, Intercontinental Hotel to host the new improved pageant, getting a list of first class guests to attend and invitation cards had been sent and so much more, only for for Folio Communications, or should we say Fidelis Anosike to come up with another set of invites for his own kind of guests and those with the other invites were treated very shabbily and some not even allowed into the event. It took a major amount of patience and good resolve for the situation to be sorted out on the day of the event and for the event to go on. 

So in the event of the shabby and embarrassing treatment of that day, where she was made to look like she had no right to have invited anyone and some other little things like breach in contract etc, we believe the seed of discord had already been sown since, so Elohor apparently waited until now to cut off quietly from the running of the pageant. 

So who is the next on board to help rescue this sinking ship? We do not know yet, but we do not even think the pageant would hold this year 2014. Would this be another long season of coma? We do not know for sure. But Folio Communications might spring another surprise pretty soon. Lets wait and see!!

This year's edition of the Miss Nigeria Pageant is going to be one of the most keenly contested ever in its history.  At least 70 per cent of the girls stands a chance. So apart from their physical beauty, what would stand the best out would be poise, intelligence, delivery and confidence.

Since after we did the report of the unveiling of the 36, our readers have reacted and have made their choice known. Out of the lucky 36 vying for the highly coveted crown, 5 have emerged as the public's favourite and they are, in no particular order - 

Queen Celestine ,

Akudo Ezinne,

Adolph Barbara,

Oghenevwede Anita Precious and

 Iheukwumere Annabelle. 

Would any of these 5 reach the finals? Would one of them get to wear the crown? Let's wait and see. D-day remains Saturday, July 6, 2013. Venue remains the Grand-ball room of the very prestigious InterContinental Hotel on 52, Kofo Abayomi, Victoria Island, Lagos.

SYLVIA NDUKA & ENE LAWANI

Not 1, not even 2, not even 3, but 4 of them at a go. And at a point in time they were all beauty queens. And truth be told, they are still gorgeous anyday and would still give some of the new queens a good run for their money. 

Check out Ene Lawani, who till tomorrow is still the longest reigning beauty queen ever in the history of beauty pageants in Nigeria. 2004 till 2010. The gorgeous one, still in her late 20's, is still a stunner any day. Then there's Sylvia Nduka, who was the Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria 2011, who since after her reign has entered into private business, she's owns her own hair brand amongst other things and we hear she's making a kill from it, making sure to get the university students and co. We hear she has opened a restaurant also in one of the higher institutions in Lagos (though that information is not fully confirmed).  Then there's Nwando Okwuosa, whose predecessor was Sylvia Edem 2002, the still very gorgeous one who was Miss Nigeria 2003, she was the one who handed over to Ene Lawani. Then there's Cecilia Ohumotu Bissong, who was the Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria 2003, the now accounting graduate of the City University of New York is still as gorgeous as they come.
